Student 2.0 Tools

I really like the Assignment Calculator because it is easy, quick, and can include email reminders. I think this could really help students who have more than one project going. I could see this being used for high school students as well. I would like to include a link to this site on my LIS 2004 page so that they could use this tool for their class project. The RPC seems more in depth and has some interesting tools. I think if students looked at the grading rubric is could help them evaluate their own work before submitting it. The Teacher Guide has many helpful handout for instructors and students. I like the idea of all of the graphic organizers which can be very helpful for visual learners like myself. I also was impressed with the video production handouts. More and more students are needing to do production and multimedia projects. I can definitely see how these tools could be incorporated into our library if only to provide a link to the resources. Hmmm....I wonder if the calculators can be used for home projects as well???? :)

Books 2.0
I love books! I don't think that will ever change. I love the smell of the ink on paper and the feel of the pages turning. I will never give up the "real thing", but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy some of the electronic components to books. I subscribed to DailyLit and was able to get Jane Eyre for free. It was easy to sign up and I look forward to my little snippets of the book in the email form. I also added a LibraryTrails widget to my blog (look at the very bottom). The trail I am on is Intelligent Chick Lit. A coworker introduced me to the "books" application for Facebook and I have added that. She added it to our library's page. It will be interesting to see if our students make comments about the books that are listed. I think this would be a great application for online classes if it could be incorporated into the course software. I was also informed about the Paperback Swap by the same coworker. It seems like a good idea especially maybe for a cash-strapped student. I can see how many of these items can be incorporated into a library supporting the print resources and not replacing them.

Other Social Networking

I am a member of WebJunction. I joined when I was in library school as part of a class assignment. I continued with it at home and continue to read posts from it. I think this is a good professional networking site with good information for library professionals. Some of the information and links I send to myself at work. I need to change my posts so that they are sent to my work email. I guess I have just had a bit of the lazies and haven't changed it :)

Social Networking

I actually have a Facebook page. I started it about the time I started 23 Things. It has been a great way to connect to old friends and to family that lives out of town. We started a Facebook page for our library and the students are really responding to it. We posted information about our banned books display and several "Facebook friends" came in to check it out. I think that connecting to our students in a format that they are familiar with is a good thing. My son has a Facebook page and a MySpace page. I prefer the Facebook page for a teenager. I have had to make him "edit" his MySpace page a few times.

Podcasts

Podcast.com and Podcastalley.com seemed to be more visually interesting and gave more information about the podcast. It was easy to search by subject. I ended up using the Educational Podcast Directory to find the one I wanted. I selected a podcast designed to help someone learn Spanish (in an unconventional way). I am really not interested in podcasting myself right now, but I can see this as a great tool for those who teach online. I will take time to listen to the podcast I subscribed to. I am all for learning something new! You can find the link to the podcast I subscribed to at

YouTube

I am familiar with YouTube. I have a 14 year old son who loves watching dirt bike videos, skateboarding wrecks, and all things funny. I decided to feature a video not related to libraries per say, but something of personal interest. As shown in my LibraryThing link, I really like Diana Gabaldon's books. Her first, Outlander, is loved by many and many people are anxiously awaiting a movie. There is much speculation, debate, and heated discussions as to who should play the title rolls. Here is a video posted on YouTube by HARDISHARDIS for one of the parts. This will have to do until the movie!

Rollyo

I created a Rollyo account and set up a search screen. My search is based on evaluating Web content. I could not use that as my title because it only allows for 20 characters. I thought this was interesting because when I was setting it up it said to be as descriptive as possible. It is hard to be very descriptive with only 20 characters! I chose to title mine, Evaluating Web Info. It was easy to set up and I can see instructors using this site to set up searches for individual classes. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to link to my blog. I clicked on the "share" tab on the homepage and it walked me through the linking process. Here is the link:

Online productivity tools

Which start page did you choose? I already have an iGoogle start page at work. We use Gmail and can customize our start page to include calendars, weather updates, quotes of the day, email, etc. I like the weather feature the best. It is handy at work and at home. There is also a sticky tool where you can type reminders. I like the fact that I can move the widgets around. I enjoy the Word of the Day widget. I'm trying my best to keep Alzheimer's at bay especially since the time change!
